Mushrooms, tiny, in the grass, waiting for the bus
Dressed in snow-white uniforms, shouted "Stop for us!"
But when the driver heard the call, and pulled off to the side
And swung the door wide open, they all ran off to hide!
Just as good, for he will not be stopping at a school
For mushroom, fungus, liverwort, or little brown toadstool
Besides, to reach the steps they'd have to leap into the sky
A foot or more, and with no legs, they could not jump that high!
I took a walk this morning, and beneath a shady elm
I saw atop four guardrail posts a tiny fairy realm
One grew a little mushroom, and one a little tree
And two grew mini-gardens just as cute as they could be
If, like me, you take a pleasant walk beside a stream
Keep your eyes and ears tuned, things aren't always what they seem
And if you just imagine, you might surprise yourself
When you stumble on a land that's surely tended by an elf
A galaxy, a fountain, tiny seeds
With umbrellas set to open in the breeze
Perched upon a stem there in the weeds
Poised to take flight high among the trees
It used to be a golden smiling sun
Then silver white as warm spring days went by
Now, at the end, quite ready for some fun
The dandelion sprites prepare to fly
A squid we set free, one chilly day
We cut it down and sent it away
And then, the next year, in a hole in the ground
A grey and leggy octopus found!
A flat place in the neighborhood
Where once a weeping cherry stood
But in this world, where all things pass
It soon will be replaced by grass...
Across the field, in uniform
A thousand red-capped soldiers march
Imaginary ramparts storm
Atop a fallen oak tree arch
